ABSTRACT

The study aimed to determine the characteristics of the water masses through the distribution pattern of temperature and salinity in the waters of northern Irian Jaya. Oceanographic data was collected northern Irian Jaya water during East Season. The survey was carried out in cooperation amongs Development Research Center of Oceanology (P3O) LIPI, Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) and the Research Institute for Marine Fisheries, Jakarta using the RV. Baruna Jaya I. The results showed that the distribution of surface waters temperature in the north Irian Jaya tend to be homogeneous within first 100 meters eastward. In the layers 200, 300 and 400 m, the temperature were constant but we obseved that water masses near the coast was warmer than offshore. The distribution of salinity in the surface water mass showed at 100 meters depth, noticeable gradations of decreasing salinity westward was observed. At a depth of 200 meters the presence of low-salinity water masses of the north to the south was occured. At a depth of 400 meters salinity is very homogenous, where most of the study area between 34.65-34.70 ‰ salinity. Characteristics of water masses in the northern waters of Irian Jaya in East season is strongly influenced by the mass of water from the bottom of the South Pacific South Equatorial Current and North Pacific water mass flow Sakal bottom. In the east and near shore water masses spread South Pacific with the character of salinity and higher temperatures compared to the west and offshore.
