ABSTRACT

Series of measurements of organic load from marine fish farm activities were conducted in different time frames to see predicted changes to the water columns and sediment condition. Earlier hydrodynamic model predicted a linear impacts of organic pollution to both environments due to growing fish farm activities in addition to anthropogenic pressures from surrounding islands. This research was aimed at analyzing temporal changes taking place at the site and mapping spatial impacts of organic loads released from the fish farm to the surrounding waters. The results suggested that changes did take place but are not as severe as predicted since topography of the areas and geomorphology of the environment in addition to the natural flushing mechanisms have helped sweep away accumulated nutrients. Analysis of biology and physical matters of the marine water and sediment showed that there is no significant changes through time. Spatial impact are detected but to the degree that are tolerated by the environment. Coral condition and fish abundance are not impacted. Since the surrounding environments are nutrient-poor, a number of organisms might have consumed nutrients released from the farm. Predicted eutrophication and other negative impacts did not take place. Therefore environmental management of the is needed to quantify impacts in the future.
